Nobody really knows what will happen on the ground once Hamas takes office. Avian flu made it obvious this week that whoever is in government in the Palestinian territories is less important for the daily management of life on both sides of the Green Line than cooperation between the two sides. Thus, Olmert ordered the Israeli health and agricultural authorities to provide whatever assistance is necessary to their Palestinian counterparts to deal with an outbreak of suspected avian flu in Gaza, where poultry was apparently affected by the same source that infected coops on the Israeli side of the border, a few kilometers away at some kibbutzim.
